On Sunday evening, a dramatic game in the Lithuanian Basketball League ("Betsafe-LKL") unfolded in Vilnius. Nevėžis-Optibet Kėdainiai (3-11) showed resilience with a powerful third quarter, but it wasn't enough. They had to concede a narrow 102-103 (23:29, 22:26, 38:19, 19:29) defeat to Wolves Twinsbet Vilnius (10-3).
This marked the eighth consecutive victory for the Vilnius team in the "Betsafe-LKL."
Fired up by Tre'Shawn Thurman's shots, the Wolves started strong, quickly establishing a double-digit lead at 13-3. Leslie Nkereuwemo's baskets slightly improved the visitors' situation (10:17), while Darylas Doualla cut the home team's lead to just six points at 23:29.
Doualla continued his impressive streak, bringing Nevėžis-Optibet within close range of their opponents (29:32). However, Marek Blaževič scored ten consecutive points, stabilizing Wolves Twinsbet's position at 47:34. At halftime, the Vilnius team maintained a double-digit lead, going into the break with a 55-45 advantage.
Kėdainiai came out after the break with a completely different energy. Amit Ebo, Vitalijus Kozys, and Joseph Girard hit three-pointers, narrowing the gap to four points at 54-58. A subsequent 12-0 run allowed Nevėžis-Optibet to seize the momentum and take the lead at 68-61. The difference continued to grow (73-64), and their offense became unstoppable despite timeouts called by Alessandro Magro. Even with long-range shots from Andrew Andrews and Arnoldas Kulboka, the visitors remained ahead at 83-74.
At the start of the decisive quarter, Andrews showed leadership (79-83), but the hosts were still unable to take control. A crucial three-pointer by Kulboka, followed by a free throw from Jeffery Taylor, and a basket by Thurman tied the game at 90-90. With half the quarter remaining, Kulboka and Blaževič gave their team a more tangible lead at 96-90, though Kozys responded with a three-pointer.
With a minute left, the teams were separated by just one shot (102-99), giving Gediminas Petrauskas' squad a chance to salvage the game. Kulboka added a free throw, but Ebo nailed a three-pointer, making it 102-103. With 33 seconds remaining, Kulboka missed a shot, and Ebo had an opportunity, but his game-winning attempt missed the mark.
Blaževič set a new personal efficiency record in the Betsafe-LKL and played his most productive game of the season, scoring 22 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and earning 34 efficiency points.
The first encounter between the teams ended with a victory for Vilnius, 90-85.
